The True Meaning of Memorial Day

Honoring Our Fallen Heroes

For some, Memorial Day marks a fabulous three day weekend full of delicious barbecues, sales galore, and the unofficial kickoff of summer, however, its commercial value has unfortunately begun to overcome its original meaning.

With our country dividing based on individual beliefs, there is and always will be a familiar ground of protecting our utmost ideals in which this country was founded on – Freedom, honor, justice, equality. All of these fundamentals describe the core values every American grasps deep inside them. However, in the midst of turmoil, we seem to have forgotten the ultimate sacrifice our fallen heroes fought so hard to defend.

Originally called Decoration Day, the earliest traditions included decorating graves with red poppies, flags, and wreaths in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Each year on Memorial Day a national moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00pm. I ask all true Americans to share a moment to honor those who have died in support of our incredible country and help to put the ‘Memorial’ back into Memorial Day.
